Meet the Officers: Genie Bustos, Service Chair

Service-GenieBustos

Why did you decide to serve as Service Chair?

I decided to be the Service Chair for the Austin Alumnae Chapter because to me, service is what ZTA is known for. All across the nation both Greeks and Non-Greeks alike know that ZTA and Susan G. Komen, Yoplait, and “Think Pink” go hand in hand! I volunteered with the the Susan G. Komen El Paso Affiliate when I was in college, and then was asked to sit on their race committee during graduate school. It was an honor. When I moved to Austin, I wanted to help the ZTA Austin Alumnae Chapter make a difference in the lives of our mothers, sisters, aunts, daughters, fathers and beyond. This is the best way I know how.

What do you hope to accomplish with service this year?

This year I hope to fill all of the volunteer spots that Susan G. Komen has asked us to help out with. Please contact me to help in any way you can. It is also my hope that all of the ZTA Austin Alumnae will band together and really believe that by saving Yoplait lids, we can Save Lives! I encourage women to contact local grocery stores for Yoplait donations, get area schools to compete in a lid collection contest, or just eat all the Yoplait you can and turn in your lids to the ZTA Austin Alumnae Chapter! :) I will also be puting together a second service project this year. Please pass along any and all ideas of what you would like to see us do this year.

What is your favorite thing about being a Zeta?

My favorite thing about being a Zeta is the friendships and bonds that have been created during and after college! I know every Zeta says this, but it is TRUE! I loved that when I moved to Austin I was immediately greeted with open arms and a plethora of ways to get involved. I look forward to every Texas Zeta Days. It is here that I have the opportunity to see my college sisters, meet new sisters, and feel the love and bond that I remember from college.

Do you have any hobbies?

I would have to say that my favorite thing to do is to relax at home with my family (Floyd and 2 pugs!) My hobbies include singing, volunteering with local non profits, kayaking, and ZTA events.

How long have you been in Austin and why did you move here?

I have been in Austin for 10 months. I moved here in December 2011 wen I was offered a great job! I LOVE it here in Austin, and love all the wonderful Zeta’s that I have met.

What is one thing most people don’t know about you?

Most people do not know that I love to sing, and although I may not seem like it, I am the shyest person in the world when it comes to singing in front of others.
