2009 Race for the Cure

As one of the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s national sponsors of Race for the Cure, members of Zeta Tau Alpha in Austin helped continue the trend of contributing to the organization through its participation in the local race Nov. 1 at the Domain. Members of the Austin ZTA Alumnae team raised $1,030 (not including the $30 race entry fee) for Komen Austin. A special thanks goes out to our top race team fundraisers, Ginger Layman, Dayoliz Perez, Kelti Bailey and Tammy Purser. There were 10 members on the Austin ZTA Alumnae team and several other alumnae members participating on other Race for the Cure teams.
A special thanks also goes out to our alumnae members, Catherine Bigler, Kari Long and Michelle Ketchaw, and Kappa chapter collegiate members Maggie Holmes, Shellie Herr and Katie Gaskin who helped volunteer at the Komen Austin Race for the Cure Survivor Tent and for passing out roses to breast cancer survivors crossing the finish line.
Supporters can now help raise additional funds to fight breast cancer in their local communities by going to ask.com/curecard and selecting “Austin” in the drop-down menu after typing in a valid e-mail address.
The Komen affiliate with the highest percentage of participant registrations will receive a $10,000 donation from ask.com. Also, find links to important breast health information.

Paint the Town Pink: A Special Yaps & Apps

For October, we have a special Yaps & Apps sponsored by Cornucopia and other local Austin women-owned businesses. “Paint the Town Pink” will be hosted at the Belmont and feature pink cocktails by Titos, pink cupcakes from Sugar Mamas, pink popcorn from Cornucopia and best of all, pink manicures from Milk and Honey. There will also be gift raffles throughout the evening.

To participate in this fun evening, the businesses are asking that you donate a minimum of $20 to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. To make your donation, please go to the event page or you may also pay at the door.

If you can’t make it to this great event, you can also participate in the Race for the Cure on Sunday, November 1st by signing up for the Zeta Alumnae Team or volunteering at the Survivor Tent. E-mail Lauri Zachary for more details.

Start Collecting Pink Yoplait Lids

The temps may still be saying “Summer,” but the arrival of Pink Yoplait Lids in the grocery stores are telling us Fall has arrived! Yoplait is celebrating the 11th Anniversary of Save Lids to Save Lives, and 2009 marks the 6th year ZTA has partnered in the campaign.

The Pink Lid collection goal for the Austin Alumnae is 1,000 lids. With 10 weeks remaining in the campaign, this should be a very attainable goal for us! Collection information and materials will be available at the Kick Off Meeting, September 17th. If you are unable to attend the meeting, contact Jen Jefferson and she will arrange to get the materials to you.

In the meantime, spread the word to your friends, neighbors and co-workers: Collect Pink Lids (and don’t forget to rinse them)! Remember, only lids that are sent into ZTA International Office and labeled Austin Area Alumnae will count toward our 1,000 lid goal!
